Door knockers and storm chasers
Somebody knocked about your roof. Here is the whole playbook.
After every big rain, crews from out of the area work Bay Area neighborhoods door to door. Some are fine. The ones that are not all follow the same script, and it takes about thirty seconds to tell.
The tells, in order of how fast they show up
- 1No license number on the truck or the card. Every real California contractor prints it everywhere. Ask for it. Most of the bad ones leave at that sentence.
- 2"We noticed hail damage from the street." Hail is rare in the Bay Area, and nobody can see it from the sidewalk. This line is the whole business model.
- 3A free inspection that finds a lot. The inspection is free because the report is the sales pitch.
- 4"We can start tomorrow if you sign today." Good roofers are booked. Pressure is the tell.
- 5A big deposit. Deposits over $1,000 on a roof are a no in California. Anyone asking for more just told you who they are.
What to do at the door
Ask for the number
Take a photo of the card and the truck. If there is no license number, you are done.
Do not let them on the roof
A stranger on your roof can create the damage they came to find. Get your own look, or a roofer you chose.
Never sign at the door
Nothing on a roof is so urgent that it cannot wait for a second quote. If you already signed, you have three business days to cancel.
If the storm really did get your roof
Tarp or bucket what you can, stay off a wet roof, and take photos of any water inside. Then get a roofer you picked, not one who picked you. Storm season is exactly when the vetting matters most, because the crews you have never heard of are all in town at once.
